From Azure AD to Microsoft Entra: New features and product family
New name for Azure Active Directory: Welcome, Microsoft Entra ID
Microsoft has announced a significant name change for one of its core identity and access management products: Azure Active Directory will be renamed Microsoft Entra ID. In this article, you'll learn more about the background to this decision, what it means for end users and enterprises, and the steps involved in the transition.
What is Microsoft Entra and why the name change?
Microsoft Entra is a comprehensive product family for identity and network access solutions. Entra ID is the central element that controls the management of user identities and access rights. With the name change, Microsoft wants to better highlight its multicloud and multiplatform capabilities. It also aims to minimize potential confusion with traditional Windows Server Active Directory and create a more consistent brand identity.

No interruptions for users
Existing Azure AD users can breathe a sigh of relief: the changeover is seamless and all previous functions, user interfaces and license models remain unchanged. Only the designations of the various plan names will be adjusted; Azure AD Free will now become Microsoft Entra ID Free.
Schedule and guidance for the changeover
The renaming was officially introduced on August 15, 2023, and should be updated in all applications and documentation by the end of the year. Microsoft recommends that companies adjust their internal and external resources accordingly by the end of the year.
Product family and features
The functions previously known as part of Azure Active Directory will now be combined in the Microsoft Entra product family. For example, the Azure AD Single Sign-On service will be known as Microsoft Entra Single Sign-On in the future.
Conclusion
The name change from Azure AD to Microsoft Entra ID is not just a cosmetic adjustment. It represents a strategic realignment that provides a clearer differentiation from older products and emphasizes the service's multicloud and multiplatform capabilities. Nothing changes functionally for end users and organizations, but the realignment promises easier navigation and a better understanding of Microsoft's diverse identity and access management offerings.
