Backup: Protection against internal threats
There is no doubt that cyber threats have become one of the biggest risks for companies. But what about the internal and home-grown risks to data and systems that companies are no less confronted with today than in the past?
Do not underestimate internal dangers
Internal threats from employees, espionage or misconduct still exist. The "Verizon Data Breach Investigations Report (DBIR) 2023" found that 19 per cent of security breaches can be attributed to internal actors. The German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) also ranks internal risks among the most important sources of danger and advises careful analysis in order to avoid failures.
Danger from within our own ranks
Important data can easily be intentionally or accidentally compromised or destroyed. One example: In June 2024, a disappointed employee deleted 180 virtual servers in his former employer's test system, causing damage of over 620,000 euros. What's more, he still had admin access even after his dismissal. This example shows how vulnerable IT systems are when companies do not take the necessary protective measures.

After the disaster comes the recovery
Depending on the company, the costs of such incidents are not necessarily the main problem. It is more important to quickly restore data and systems to the state they were in shortly before they were compromised. A good backup and disaster recovery strategy is crucial here. Backups must be stored on unalterable storage media to ensure that they can be fully restored in the event of an emergency. In these cases, backup solutions are needed that reduce recovery times and points (RTOs/RPOs) to minutes.
