Introducing High Volume Email for Microsoft 365: What you need to know
Microsoft is pleased to announce the public preview of High Volume Email (HVE) for Microsoft 365. This new service is primarily intended for business applications and other high-volume SMTP authentication transfers. It enables the sending of internal messages beyond the current limits of Exchange Online. This article explains what HVE is, how it works and what benefits it offers.
Introducing High Volume Email for Microsoft 365: What you need to know
High Volume Email (HVE) is a service that has been specially developed for sending large quantities and high volumes of internal emails. Companies that previously used local servers in an Exchange hybrid configuration can now switch to HVE and decommission their local servers.
Possibilities with HVE
Increased email capacity: Customers can send larger volumes of emails than usual to internal recipients without exceeding the recipient rate limit. Limitation for external recipients: The volume for external recipients remains limited, as Azure Communication Services is intended for these emails. Flexible management: Administrators can set their own limits per account and use a consumption-based billing model.
How does HVE work?
HVE is based on a transaction model that is based on the number of emails sent. During the preview, the service is free, but limited to 100,000 recipients per day and customer. This provides sufficient volume to test the service and receive feedback.
Technical details and technical terms
Creation of mail users: Up to 20 mail users can be created during the preview in Exchange Online, which send messages via a special SMTP endpoint. Management via the Exchange Admin Centre: An administrator interface allows you to manage PDB accounts and track usage. SMTP authentication: During the preview, authentication takes place via SMTP standard authentication. After general availability, OAuth authentication will be supported.
Restrictions during the preview
The start of the public rollout (end of the preview) is currently planned for September 2024. You will not incur any costs until then at least. However, there are some restrictions during the public preview, which will be extended when it becomes generally available: Internal messages only: HVE is only relevant and available for internal messages. SMTP authentication only: Only SMTP standard authentication is possible during the preview. Free use: Use is free of charge during the preview, but will be subject to a charge later. Limited number of accounts: A maximum of 20 accounts per tenant are permitted. Volume restrictions: 100,000 recipients per day per tenant and 2,000 external recipients per day per account.
Summary
Microsoft has launched the public preview of High Volume Email (HVE) for Microsoft 365 to enable companies to send large volumes of internal emails. The service offers flexible management options and a consumption-based billing model. During the preview phase, HVE is free, with specific restrictions that will be extended with general availability.
