More transparency, more protection: Microsoft Purview
Microsoft Purview expands cloud logging for greater transparency and security. Microsoft is expanding the security measures of its cloud platform by providing enhanced logging capabilities that give customers more visibility into security incidents.
Why logging is important
Moving data and applications to the cloud brings many benefits, but also presents new cybersecurity challenges. Log data is a critical tool in this context. They provide verifiable insight into access and usage to cloud services, as well as their data, and can be valuable in digital forensics and security incident response.
New features in Microsoft Purview Audit (Standard)
To better meet ever-increasing security requirements, Microsoft is introducing advanced logging capabilities in Microsoft Purview Audit (Standard). Purview Audit provides centralized visualization of cloud log data. The Standard version of the service will undergo an update in the coming months that will provide access to enhanced security logs for all customers at no additional cost. These include such things as more detailed email logs and an increase in the default retention period from 90 to 180 days. Of particular note, for example, is logging of access to email items. The Standard Edition of Purview Audit is included in Microsoft Business Premium, Office 365 E3, or Microsoft 365 E3, for example.
Advantages for companies
Organizations already using the premium version of Microsoft Purview Audit (through Office or Microsoft 365 E5) will continue to benefit from exclusive features, such as smarter insights and longer data retention. The new features are designed to help organizations respond more effectively to security events and meet their compliance requirements.
Cooperation for more safety
These improvements are part of an intensive collaboration with the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) and reflect Microsoft's commitment to a more secure digital world. Jen Easterly, CISA director, praised Microsoft's decision and emphasized that this is a step in the right direction.
Conclusion
Microsoft's advanced logging capabilities in Purview not only strengthen visibility, but also trust in cloud infrastructure. They are part of a broader initiative to improve cybersecurity in cooperation with industry experts and government agencies. The updates will be available to all business and government customers in September 2023, making an important contribution to addressing the increasing cyberthreats.
