Swiss SMEs are reluctant to implement cyber security measures
Swiss small businesses are facing a growing threat from cyberspace, but are often still reluctant to take appropriate security precautions. Despite increased risk awareness, studies show that both organisational and technical protective measures are neglected.
Decline in home office and cyber security
The Covid-19 pandemic has changed the way many companies work, but the number of home office workplaces in Swiss SMEs has been declining since 2020. According to an annual study*, the proportion fell steadily from 67% to 56% in 2023. This trend goes hand in hand with an increase in successful cyber attacks on companies, which have already affected more than one in ten SMEs.

Awareness versus realisation
Although many Swiss SMEs are aware of the dangers of cybercrime, the level of implementation of security measures is still high. In particular, organisational measures such as security audits and employee training are neglected, even though they are crucial for protection against cyber attacks.
Outlook and need for action
A recent study emphasises the urgency for Swiss SMEs to strengthen their cyber security measures in order to avoid financial losses and the loss of sensitive data. A collaboration of industry experts shows that both technical and organisational precautions as well as employee training are crucial. The study is based on a telephone survey of 502 SME managers in German-speaking Switzerland, French-speaking Switzerland and Ticino between April and June 2023 and was conducted in collaboration with Digitalswitzerland, FHNW, SATW, ADss, Gfs-Zurich and Mobiliar Insurance.
